With the weather changes comes the season for houseboat maintenance. Northern California's mild weather makes it easy to perform year round repairs. While the rest of the country is snowed in, December marks the beginning of our new series "The Masterfab Rehab Project". We purchased a late 1970's Master Fabricator 56 foot houseboat to demonstrate different repair techniques and design elements you can incorporate into your own project.
Master Fabricator built very popular steel pontoon style vessels in the 1970's through the late 80's. They had a solid heavy duty hull and floor joist system along with many floor plan options from the factory. These boats can be purchased at reasonable prices in this market and offer more usable square footage than traditional fiberglass hulls in the same price range.
PART 1: Dry dock and planning As with any large project, planning a budget and strategy is the first item that must be done before work begins. Houseboats can mirror many home improvement projects, but unlike your home, work is usually performed at a repair yard or areas where tools and services have to be brought to the boat. This adds time and additional labor to the schedule which in the end, makes your overall costs increase. Today we will start with our budget sheet and time line. It is important to price out what materials will cost in order to maximize your budget.
